Soil is a renewable

resource.

Soil as a Natural Resource

Materials that people get from the natural environment are natural

resources. Most of the food that people eat comes from plants or

from animals that eat plants. Plants grow in soil. The soil is a natural

resource that people depend on for survival.

Soil is a

renewable resource

. That means that natural processes

make new soil, but it happens very slowly. Soil must be used wisely.

If the soil resource is overused, it will lose its ability to support the

growth of plants. Farmers need to renew the soil nutrients to make

sure plenty of food crops will be available for people.
