High-Altitude Zone

High in the mountains, there

are forests of evergreen trees. This

high-altitude zone has the right

conditions for skiing and other

snow sports.

Western mountains, such as

the Rockies, Sierra Nevada, and

Cascades, are in this zone.

Dry Subtropical Zone

Winter weather in the dry subtropical zone is usually warm and

rainy. The summer weather is hot and dry. The dry subtropical

zone has oak woodlands and chaparral. It also has a very diverse

community of shrubs, grasses, and mixed forests. This zone is

excellent for farming, fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and raising

livestock. Parts of central California have this climate.
