Temperate

Marine Zone

The temperate marine zone of the

Pacific Northwest is cool and wet

throughout the year. The Pacific

Ocean helps create the cool, moist

weather. Winters are cool and rainy.

Summers are also cool and often

foggy. The evergreen forests here

grow large redwood, fir, pine, and

spruce trees. The moist forests are

home to ferns, mosses, lichens,

and fungi.

Subarctic and Arctic Zones

Two climate zones occur in most of Alaska and Canada. They are

the subarctic zone and the arctic zone. The climate is extremely cold

most of the year. The summer is short and cool. Plants are small and

close to the ground. This is a result of the very short growing season

and harsh winters. Many plants live in wetlands or bogs.
