A modern kind of waterwheel is the

water turbine

. Water turbines are built

into the bottoms of dams. Water from the

reservoir behind the dam turns the turbine

to generate

electricity

.

High-pressure water flows into a chamber

above the turbine. Water then flows through

the turbine, pushing on the turbine blades

as it goes. The blades turn a shaft, which is

connected to the generator.

Huge generators are built into

the base of Hoover Dam in

Arizona and Nevada.
